Mardi Gras Party refers to that grand Mardi Gras celebration held in New Orleans each year. Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday in French, and this is the day in many places around the world, not just New Orleans, during which celebrants each as much fattening, rich foods as possible and celebrate as much as possible before the beginning of Lent. Most of you know that during lent followers of certain Judeo-Christian religions must give up something they love for the forty-seven days until Easter in a sort of fast. Mardi Gras started in North America when the French explorers brought their celebrations with them in about 1699. As time passed Mardi Gras survived in New Orleans because of the Creoles or descendants of the French who kept their traditions alive. Each year Mardi Gras developed into a larger and larger event. Parades and Balls were held by the local krewes and each year a new king of the Carnival was chosen. Outsiders began to visit to observe the festivities, and later on to get in on the festivities.
Many people who now celebrate the exciting, rich, fantastical celebration of Mardi Gras arent doing it in preparation for Lent and may not even realize the underlying religious origins of the holiday.
Mardi Gras has three official colors that were chosen in 1872 by the King of the Carnival. They are purple, green and gold. Purple stands for justice, green stands for faith, and gold for power. The celebrations were at their peak each year during the past decade, until the devastation by two recent Hurricanes in 2005 that destroyed New Orleans. Mardi Gras continued in 2006 as scheduled, so that the celebration of Mardi Gras each year remains unbroken.
